How much do you know about the work of the WCA Board? We want to share some information you may not know about it!
The World Cube Association is led by the WCA Board, consisting of Chris Hardwick, Ilkyoo Choi (최일규), Luis J. Iáñez, Pedro Santos Guimarães and Ron van Bruchem.
The WCA Board is responsible for the WCA organization as a whole. As part of their day-to-day work, they discuss issues that affect the WCA and advise the committees. The WCA Board oversees that the applications to hold WCA Competitions meet fair conditions to give all the world similar chances to compete, and finally approves and announces the competitions accordingly. After competitions, they read reports from the WCA delegates about competitions in order to be up to date on the WCA activity worldwide and take part in the discussion of any incidents that occur.
The Board is also responsible for helping the WCA fulfill its mission: “more competitions in more countries with more people and more fun, under fair and equal conditions.” This means spreading cubing to new communities and countries and working together with the Senior Delegates to open up cubing to even more people!
你对WCA董事会的工作了解多少?我们愿意给你分享一些你可能不知道的事情。
WCA被WCA董事会所领导,由以下Chris Hardwick, Ilkyoo Choi (최일규), Luis J. Iáñez, Pedro Santos Guimarães and Ron van Bruchem人员所组成。
A cofounder of the WCA and current WCA board member from The Netherlands, Ron has been cubing for nearly 40 years. “I got my first cube at the age of 13, in July 1980 when I was in hospital for 8 weeks. A friend's mother had brought it from former Czechoslovakia. She said I could only leave the hospital if I had solved it. There were no books on the cube and there was no internet. So, I had to figure it out myself. I had my first successful solve after two weeks. When the cube came out in The Netherlands I was the only person who could solve it, so every day I had tens of kids at my door, asking me for help. This made me some kind of local celebrity and also fired up my enthusiasm to keep on cubing.”
His first competitive experience was at World Championships 2003 in Toronto and he still goes to competitions all around the world such as Mongolian Open 2013, TCG & Friends 2015 in Peru, and, his favorite, World Championships 2011 in Bangkok! “We have a wonderful community of friendly people from around the globe who share the same passion. I have the privilege to travel to many countries and everywhere I see a similar kind of spirit: friends helping each other and having fun together with puzzles. We are the same in being a little bit different. Among cubers I have this special feeling of being connected through this strange but fun hobby. I am especially proud that somehow our community found a way to have this special atmosphere and sustain it, even now that we have grown so large. I enjoy watching videos from remote countries and see that this atmosphere is the same, wherever you go to a competition.”
For the future of cubing, he wants to make sure everyone can participate in competitions close to their home and he also understands that we need to manage the growing size of competitions and competitors as we expand into new areas. Not only does he have goals for the WCA, but he has goals for himself: “I turned 50 on April 20 and I am aspiring to be the first cuber over 50 to solve Rubik's Cube in under 10 seconds. I am more motivated than ever and even though I know I cannot win anymore, there is still so much fun in being part of all this and improving my times.” Please join us in thanking Ron for all of his commitment to the cubing community and make sure to say hi to him if you see him at a competition!
有幸采访一位WCA官员
Ron van Bruchem!
