A Letter From Alex Pop:
(Pronounced Pope)
Life in Romania under the dictator Nicolae Ceauseecu was not good. Although I was happy with my work as a machinist and with my wife and children, it was impossible for me to live without the basic human rights that all people everywhere should be able to enjoy. Losing my Romanian citizenship was very hard for me but it was worth it to be free - in my heart I could never be a Communist and I wanted a better way of life for my wife and children.
The sixteen months I spent as a political prisoner were very difficult. The first eight days I refused food and water, to protest my arrest and the terrible conditions of the jail.
The treatment of prisoners was very bad. We were not permitted to read or write and were allowed few visitors. To relieve the awful bore dom and keep my mind active, I constructed a puzzle in my head: a puzzle similar to Rubik's Cube, but much more intriguing. It took me two months to complete it.
In prison, I became more determined than ever to win freedom for myself and my family. When I was released, I obtained an American visa and a sponsor within three weeks. The strict Romanian government tried to make things difficult by holding up my family's passport. It took two years to obtain it and permission to emigrate. The authorities tried to get me to go without my family, but I absolutely refused.
Life now in America is wonderful and we are very happy. I found work and we bought a small house. My children Flavia and Daniel are doing very well in school. My wife Elena sings in the church choir and studies English. We hope to become American citizens very soon.
Now that SMART ALEX is a success, we want to share our good fortune with some of the less fortunate back in Romania. Many children were left abandoned in hospitals and institutions near my home town, Cluj, and my wife and I want to help them. We will send ten percent of our profits from the sale of SMART ALEX to these poor children. We are very lucky to be here and want to help others who are not as fortunate as we are.
