Hi,
First, I recognize your concern that there are too few delegates in China. I think all of us would agree that there are many locations that would benefit from having new delegates, not only in China but also around the world. I would point you to India, which is similar to China in many respects, and which has I believe only two active delegates. Unfortunately, we are not able to place people everywhere we may want them to be.
As for the number of delegates currently in China, there are two limitations. First is the quality of competition organization. Currently China hosts the second most competitions of any country, behind only the US. In 2012, one in three competitions in Asia were held in China. As is, we are already hosting a very large number of competitions in China. One of our goals is to hold competitions to a constant high standard throughout the world. There is potential to greatly increase the number of competitions we host in China, but that could lead to difficulty in maintaining a high standard of quality across all competitions. As such, we want to first ensure we can host high quality competitions that provide the best experience for competitors. We want to organize better competitions before we push to organize more competitions.
The second issue regards reliability of potential delegates. As you are certainly aware, over the past several years competitions in China have faced a special difficulty, with some people seeking to disrupt competitions and cause trouble for fellow cubers. We have been careful in recommending new delegates in order to be sure that we all trust each other and work together cooperatively. The problems caused by disruptive individuals means we need delegates who we can count on to handle problems in a fair manner.
You may remember in early 2010 there were people in north-west China that said they wanted to hold competitions. We recommended Fangyuan Chang as a delegate, because she was willing to travel to the north-west. After she became a delegate, the people canceled their plans for competitions. You may remember in late 2010 there were people in north-east China saying they wanted to hold competitions. We recommended Hao Wang, from Shenyang, as a delegate. After he became a delegate, there's been almost no one from the north-east looking to host competitions.
As is, more delegates is only one issue facing cubing in China. Better communication, better organization, and a better sense of community are all needed for the growth of cubing in China.
I appreciate your comments. Generally there is little interaction between the Chinese cubing community and the international cubing community. More interaction will help create a better and more inclusive community for all of us.
